Principal aims
The LaborEst, founded in 1999 by Edoardo Mollica at the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, takes place over the internal functions of applied research - as part of the economic evaluation and estimation applied to plans, programs, projects (ICAR/ 22 - Appraisal) – and external activities such as support institutions and local governments, partnerships, research and consulting services for third parties in collaboration with other learning and research centers.
The interdisciplinary scientific research activities have the purpose of knowledge transferring to the territory, with particular reference to the Metropolitan City of RC, such as scientific knowledge and technological innovation support to institutions and local authorities, with particular reference to: Metropolitan City, Inner Areas and, more generally, of Local Development. Specific attention is paid to the issues of development of cultural resources, environmental, landscape; innovative tools for the government of urban and territorial transformations and, in a broader view, territorial cohesion.
The success of the mission of LaborEst is mainly based on the activities of researchers, postdocs and graduate students, trained as part of the "Conservation of Architectural and Environmental Heritage" PhD with curriculum estimating on issues such as the protection, conservation and enhancement. The expertise and skills acquired, offer a high degree of complementarity and multidisciplinary, supported by the involvement of expertise of other subject areas.
Research activities
The activities fall under the "Economic appraisal of plans, programs, projects," even of a Community nature, related to urban regeneration and enhancement of the tangible and intangible resources.
Related Facilities
To facilitate the tasks and functions and to better meet the territory’s research needs, the LaborEst is divided into four "thematic operational structures":
1. Metropolitan CITY OBSERVATORY: with the aim to come up with ideas and concrete proposals for increasing the competitiveness of Metropolitan Cities through strategic planning and integrated projects of local development;
2. Inland AREAS OBSERVATORY: aimed at the development and implementation of innovative development strategies and enhancement actions for Inner Areas, in support of public and private stakeholders, including the activation of territorial labs specifically dedicated to local development;
3. Monitoring UNESCO Sites: with the intent to promote the Calabrian tangible and intangible cultural and environmental heritage;
4. URBAN REAL ESTATE Observatory: with the purpose of supporting local authorities through economic and financial studies for the enhancement of unused public properties and complex programs for urban regeneration.
Scientific Production
The LaborEst contributes to the scientific debate around relevant issues through the publication of the LaborEst journal and the organization of national and international conferences, such as the Symposium "New Metropolitan Perspectives", a biannual international symposium, whose first edition has been held in 2014 in Reggio Calabria.
