Principal aims
The Laboratory of General and Applied Entomology was established with the aim of undertaking studies and research in the field of basic and applied entomology. The projects activated at the laboratory are aimed at identifying and studying methods with a low environmental impact for the control of pest-infesting animal crops and foodstuffs.
The activity of the Agricultural and Applied Entomology Laboratory is focused on:
- use of natural substances for pest control;
- bio-ethological studies on the main plant and foodstuff parasites;
- development of biological and integrated control methods;
- development of attractants and repellents.
Research activities
The research activities carried out in the laboratory concern issues of forest, environmental, sensu, agrarian and agri-food. Particular attention is paid to pests recently and / or dreaded introduction in Italy and to feasibility studies for the introduction of exotic natural antagonists.
Research was carried out on innovative methods and technologies for the control of animals infesting foodstuffs (heat, toxic and inert gases, essential oils, etc.) by launching trials in Italy and abroad.
The laboratory carries out consultancy activities for the main multinational companies producing agropharmaceuticals for the verification of the effectiveness, selectivity and phytotoxicity of the new synthetic insecticidal molecules, taking care of the experimental protocols and the management of the operations entrusted to different Test Centers.
